Thoughts that Pop 1.3

Catching up on American Idol 10, Top 24 results show:

To Thia Megia: When you know you're going to be on television, in front of millions, why in God's name would you wear that awful sweater? Again??

Casey Abrams is my American Idol 10 boyfriend, due to his melodica and auditioning with "Why Don't You Do Right?" while playing stand-up bass. Previous winners include: Lee DeWyze and Bo Bice.

I will miss Jordan Dorsey and his freakishly long fingers and thumbs a la Morgan Freeman in Lean On Me.

Contrary to popular belief, I will miss Brett Loewenstern and his feminine wiles.

No, judges, not Naima. Oh, God, no. She is so gnarly.

Saw a "Jeebus" fish on a Ford Escape on the way to work. Moved on before I could get a pic.

Thoughts that Pop 1.0

There are 2 people from The Daily Show in this movie. 3 if you count Steve Carrell. More if you count anyone I'm missing.

I've seen Lucas have many light bulb moments lately. You can see the wheels turning, then the light bulb. This makes me the happiest as I've been as a mother so far. Last night, it was figuring out what "blocks" means.

Jordan Dorsey (American Idol 10, 12 fellas night) has freakishly long fingers and even longer thumbs.

There are these cookies I loved called Magic Middles. I haven't found them in years. They appeared at work, and I had two. Something right in a week of at least 5 major wrongs.

Traffic tip: On Page Ave, the right lane is actually the passing lane. Just go with it.

I don't have Bone Thugz on my work iTunes, so I can't listen to No Surrender.

Lucas loves spicy food.

You know how Dove Promises chocolates have little inspiring messages in them? So do my cough drops: "Take Charge and Mean It."

In my head, to girl who's short to begin with: "Girl, that skirt is doing nothing for those hips"

Peace out.

Dear Miata driver

Dear Miata driver,

You are in a Miata with racing stripes. You are going 50 in a 60.

Tuesday, September 7

I could totally eat a hundred of each of these right now

D fell asleep early, and H came over to keep me company. I wasn't thinking, and followed much wine with much beer. Way to end the Labor Day weekend!

Now it's almost lunchtime and I want a hundred...
  1. McDonald's Hamburgers
  2. Casa Gallardo Chunky Chicken Quesadillas
  3. Hardee's sausage biscuits
  4. Taco Bell Cheesy Gordita Crunches
  5. Cheese pizzas from Frankie and Louie's
  6. Ding Dongs
  7. Chicken wings, spicy
  8. Grilled buffalo chicken sandwiches from Seamus McDaniel's (Homemade bleu cheese dressing!!!)
  9. Bowls of that orzo pasta salad me and D used to make all the time
  10. Bowls of Spaghetti O's, with meatballs
I'm reading "In Defense of Food" right now, but with cravings like these, I suppose it isn't sinking in like it should. Surely Michael Pollan has had a night or two of overindulgence followed by a breakfast/lunch of greasy goodness, don't you think?

Probably going to hit Subway

New Directions

It has been over a year and a half since I've checked in at the ol' blog.

My NEW and FOCUSED idea is to publish lists. Of anything that pops in my head. Because the internets is interested.

For any idea that is negative, I will create a positive counterpart to maintain the balance (see below). The first list will be the initial idea.

A while back at an art exhibit, I saw an installation comprised entirely of lists made in pencil on loose leaf, ranging from music to weather to why the artist could not get laid.

I can't deny that I thought that was dumb. For an art exhibit. But not for a blog, right?

In honor of the title of this post, and my new direction and (gulp) commitment to updating, I humbly submit the following duo:

Reasons "Glee!" Sucks
  1. Rachel's face and wardrobe
  2. Quinn had a baby choreographed to "Bohemian Rhapsody"
  3. Rolling Stone interviewed some of the actors (the chicks who play Rachel, Quinn, and Sue Sylvester, and the dudes who play Finn and Kurt), and they sounded like douches. Even Jane Lynch (Sue), which was disappointing.
  4. Fake pregnancy thing.
  5. Wasting Slurpees
  6. Mr. Schue's singing
  7. Nightmare-inducing "Vogue" video

Reasons "Glee!" Doesn't Suck

  1. Sue Sylvester is a hell of a role model
  2. Brittany's one-liners
  3. I would not have heard "Single Ladies" if I hadn't watched
  4. Neil Patrick Harris
  5. Mercedes can wail!
  6. Bursting into song is delightful!
  7. Some of the mash-ups are pretty cool

surprise!

by the week of thanksgiving, it had been four months and my cycles were still out of wack, so i made an ob appt. being 2008, i figured there would be something they could do for me. not that four months is particularly long, but with cycles ranging from under 3 to over 7 weeksl, and lack of decent info from my pcp, i felt a check-up couldn't hurt.

my appointment was at 2:30 on monday, december first*. i arrived with my bbt charts in hand, which included some other info that would be helpful in predicting good days for, ahem, trying, as well as testing.

the tech had me pee in a cup and showed me to an exam room. when the dr saw me, i explained that the charting software had said i'd ovulated, and to pee on a stick on friday, november 21, then a week before that, changed its mind and said that ovulation had not been detected. i'd tested that day anyway (10 days prior), and came up NO. which was fine, because my sister was having her thanksgiving bash the next day, and if i wasn't pregnant, at least i could take part in festivities, right?

the dr checked my charts, and said i should have ovulated about when the software originally said. She suggested we do an ultrasound, to check for bad things to rule them out, then figure out what to do. i was led to the u/s waiting area, and started to get nervous. what if there's something really wrong, and the pill had had nothing to do with it? what if...oh the doctor's back. "new plan," she said. "let's talk in my office."

GULP.

"you have not gotten your period lately," she told me, "because you are pregnant."

me: oh my god.

dr: it looks like you're about 6 weeks.

me: oh my god.

in a daze, i accepted the bag of vitamins and the pamphlets she handed me, and made an appointment for the next week.

thank goodness daren answered when i got to the car and called him.

daren: any news?

me: yeah

daren: what kind of news?

me: big news.

he decided to cancel his students and come home so we could celebrate. next i called my mom. she cried.

*you'll notice that this date, the date i discovered my pregnancy, is AFTER thanksgiving. just want to make that clear as i've heard someone is convinced (unfoundedly) i was keeping secrets over that weekend.

catching up (circa 8/08)

Today I'm 12 weeks, with my first. It's really starting to sink in, but I can't help but worry (I'm a real worrier, that's why my friends call me Whiskers. Wil Ferrell as Harry Caray? Anyone? Never mind). I've only known about the pregnancy for 7 of the 12 weeks, and since those 7 weeks have gone by so slowly, well, I don't think it will ever be August!

I said I was going to be good about blogging and recording my feelings & such, but I've slacked so far. Therefore, as I near the end of the first third of this journey, I shall play the age-old game of "Catch Up."

In the beginning...

We (I) decided that we would start trying after our first wedding anniversary. So, on June 30, after over ten years, I stopped taking birth control. So many people (including my mom) had told me that they got pregnant right away when they got off the pill. So I waited.

My cycles were out of whack. I didn't make an OB appointment, because it had only been a few months. I did go to my GP twice over the summer, for other issues, and being that she's a doctor, thought I could ask her about it:

Me: oh by the way, is it normal that my cycles are 19 days then 35 then 30 then 50?

Dr: How long have you been trying?

Me: [the length of time it had been]

Dr: well, it usually takes [the length of time it had been one month]

The second time, I saw the PA instead of my doctor. I got the same response, plus some more, that I didn't nor never would, ask for:

PA: Where are you spiritually?

Me: Um, nowhere? We have our beliefs, but don't really go to church.

PA: Well, I'm a Christian, but don't think I'm cramming anything down your throat, as I proceed to cram it down your throat, including, but not limited to "God has a plan."

Now, I understand and respect that people make their religious choices, and even want to spread it to others (see: my dad). I found this exchange extremely inappropriate, though, as I was asking a medical question of a medical professional, and did not get a medically professional response. I almost called the office the next day to complain, but did not, being a champion of "why rock the boat on purpose when I do so often without realizing?". I did advise my mom and sister to avoid her.

(Note: recently my sister had a super sinus infection, and went in for the sole purpose of getting medication for it. She saw the PA. The PA refused to prescribe her anything. I don't know if they aren't allowed to or what, but she did not indicate that to my sister.)

Things did start looking up, obviously. Next post: The Topsy-Turvy OB Appointment.

rear-ended grrrr

so, my car, Whiskers, is all jacked up, and i'm sad because i love that car and they don't make them anymore so if they total it i have to get something else, but if they fix it, it won't be the same zippy car it used to be, i'm sure.

it happened tuesday after work. i was stopped in the usual stopped traffic from w-b page to s-b 270 (whoever designed that on/off ramp is a GENIUS!). the guy behind me decided not to stop, and now the entire back of my car is smashed in, one taillight is gone (vaporized!) and the front driver's side is smashed in too, because i was pushed into the car in front of me, which suffered minor bumper scratches. oh, and a piece of something went rolling away down page, then was hit by a car and bounced to the other side of the median.

i had hella pain, cause i braced when i saw him in the rearview. my head bounced like a crash-test dummy and i smacked the back of it against the headrest. my doctor says i seem to be ok, just sore, but took x-rays just in case.

i've finally talked to the guy's insurance, and they will accept liability as soon as they talk to the driver who was in front of me. which is good, because rental cars are expensive, as will be fixing my car/buying a new car.

if they do total it, i'm going to buy a tank.

take me down to the paradise city*

the mj morning show is in reruns this week, because the whole show is on vacation (lucky ducks – i wish i could take a weeklong vacation, and just air reruns of my job). on the show they played this morning, the gang was reading a list of the worst songs of the 90’s. some i had to agree with (macarena and mambo number five, for example), but on a couple I was all "nuh-uh!" like how bizarre (you know you love it!), and november rain.

november rain? wha?

november rain, had, like, the coolest video in 1991. in fact, the use your illusion duo produced cool video after cool video that summer! They even gave a shout out to the old STL in the liner notes (although it wasn’t very nice - remember that fateful day at the brand new Riverport?)

Eer-ree-gahd-less, November Rain will always hold a special place in my heart, not so much from STL 1991, but Berlin 2000. I spent four weeks that summer in Germany, and one weekend some friends and I ventured to the capital. Late one night we were returning back to the hostel after partying it up, and heard a strange sound as we climbed the stairs to the S-bahn platform. At the top we discovered a 40-something German guy, all eighties-ed out, maybe homeless, on a bench. Next to him? A straight-up boombox, blasting November Rain. And, after the ballady part, when it starts to rock, this guy started headbanging.

They should have a guy like that at every train station.

(*the lyrics to november rain are hella depressing, so i titled the blog something happier, cause this is happy story)

my heart's crammed in my cranium

i have had a headache since friday.

i take stuff and it takes the edge off, but it never goes away.

i've had to cancel/say no to at least one thing each day since then, because i'm in pain and crabby. it better go away, cause there's a lot going on this weekend that mustn't be missed. and next week. grrrrrrr.

this = me venting

you = feeling sorry for shauna and her dumb head

i have a doctor's appointment for jan 7 for a physical, but hopefully it will be gone by then! why is it so impossible to get a doctor's appointment? if this headache is a sign of something serious, i'm gonna be sooooo pissed.

thank you.

it's LOG!

or Shauna's Still a Kid Even After Going Corporate

Tuesday 2 of my bosses were in town, and informed me we would be going to dinner with one of the managers of the client I work onsite for (for whom I work onsite? yuck!)

During the dinner, one of bosses and the manager's husband found they are both fans of pachinko machines. The manager's husband's father had brought one back from Japan during WWII, and he figures it's worth some cash being that, and this is a direct quote:

"it's big, it's heavy, it's wood"

I looked around to see if any of the other 3 people at the table had caught that. They hadn't, which I attribute to the fact that I was the youngest person present, and the next youngest person was 10 years my senior. Therefore, I worked hard to suppress the laughter.

But you'll laugh with me, right?

siempre olvido

always forget...

robert goulet is in beetlejuice. he was really funny on howard stern once, and i love him. right on.

come sail away

i love the lake. i love the lake in autumn, when i get to go on a boat. saturday, there wasn't a cloud in the sky.

the people we stayed with have a house on a cove. the cove is like melrose place, only with a lake instead of a pool, and rednecks instead of californians. also, everyone is older than the people were on mr (i think). we were serenaded by nickelback sing-alongs from the second tier.

it was sad to leave, but a beautiful drive back to the interstate. i'm starting to know my way around that area. daren is ready to buy a lake house. we're hoping to have one by next summer (BIG hope). then we'll need a boat, of course. pontoon or ski boat?

i'll post some pix when lacey gets hers developed. my camera is still m.i.a.

these thoughts keep me going on cold gray st louis autumn day, when it feels like it's nighttime out when i'm in my office.

hacienda happy hour today. i don't think we'll sit outside- brrrrr!

it's a matter of tact

some ramblings (durka durka worka worka).....my blog, so it's all about ME!

oh, my god, do i hear a baby crying in the office? can i bring my cat to work tomorrow?

this weekend, my significant other came out to a few bars with me, as he so rarely does. At one of the venues with one of the crowds, he pointed out something that i've been noticing for years, but was unsure if it was just me, or real, or what.

"how come you're not in the picture?" is it true?

all of my friends are picture takin' fools, god love 'em. sometimes, i'm in the mood to take a ton (can we say "craig schuster opens for leon russell"? seriously, i think i averaged about 50 shots a minute) and am not always mindful if i've included everyone. who's got time to think about that, when there is such a good time to be documented?

one friend, however, seems to avoid including me in the frame. not sure if it's conscious, subconscious, or unconscious, but i'm pretty sure, given the issue's frequency, that it's some sort of conscious.

now, i could think "hey, who does that joker think s/he is? does s/he think i'm ugly or something?" especially when they visibly roll their eyes when someone asks me to get in. i could have developed a real complex about this after all this time.

BUT - they can think what they want, because what i've learned is that i look pretty awful in most of the photos this person takes of me. someone else can include me and i look all superstar & fun times, and in a photo this person takes at the same event, i look like i weigh about 300 pounds and am half dead. "i am smelling like a rose that somebody gave me cause i'm dead and bloated!" ew, how does stp keep creeping in to everything i do lately?

a strange phenomenon to be sure. no ending to that really. it's getting rather difficult to keep things anonymous. moving on to....

.....A NEW CAR!!!!!

felix will be retired this friday (as in, not working, as opposed to getting new tires). the dealer offered me a $400 trade in, if that paints a picture of my need for a new car. i can't wait, i can't wait, i can't wait. i'm going to drive and drive in my new black shiny scion xA - i'm thinking of naming it felicia, since i've decided she's a girl and can be felix's namesake. the promise of a new car has done wonders for my self-esteem.

88 days until i'm hitched. anybody feel like dancing?

Wednesday, March 21

frühling!!!!

it's spring now! i wore a skirt today! it's supposed to storm this week! after a topsy turvy winter, spring will surely bring some calm, and maybe, just maybe, i'll get to go out and see my friends more, since i'm FINALLY getting the hang of my new (demanding) job!
love you all!!!

Fat Bottomed Grrl

I have been running for about a month now...

(I actually started in September, but have only had a semi-regular workout routine for the past month at my new gym with the AWESOME treadmills with BUILT-IN TVS!)

...and although the magazine that was my inspiration for running said "many women enjoy running's leg-slimming effects" or some such nonsense, my legs are BIGGER! I don't know if my thighs have ever been larger, and they've always been the bane of my physical-self-image.

On the bright side, I've noticed that my legs are MUCH tighter (no more jiggle!), but some of my pants are getting tight. The only changes are 1) I run 1.5 - 3 miles 3 times a week, and 2) I don't do as much weight-training as I have in the past. I have the same eating habits (admittedly bad). I have also started wean myself off of my anti-depressants, as it was brought to my attention that I've been packing on some pounds since I started taking them.

GUH! It's frustrating.

But I really do like running - the endorphin rush, and the feeling that I'm repairing my lungs from the damage I did to them in my capricious youth.
